-250m free with 15 push-ups after each 25m

-10x75m like:
*25m under water
*25m fly (with max. 1 breath)
*25m fast freestyle

-400-300-200-100 medley only using your legs

Maybe it's not the hardest the hardest set but it is hard and fun (!):

16 times 25m as fast as you can with jump start and when you finish the 25m stroke you have to get out of the water and run back to the other side of the pool and jump again.
16 times like that on 30 sec.

my hardest sets were:

3000 free the fastest u can go !
15X400 free 30 sec rest
15X200 free 30 sec rest
15X100 free 1.45 min

not in the same practise !

not the hardest sets but they are sorta hard.

5000 for time (try doing it fly)

100x100 at a fast interval (I did 1:15)

on a 1:15 base: 5x500 descend 1-5
4x400 descend 1-4
3x300 descend 1-3
2x200 descend 1-2
1x100 fast

those are a few hard sets I have done before

one of my hardest set ever was a 2-hours-test on long course... it was the 2nd practice that day and we had to give everything, cause it was the last practice of two weeks of training-camp. i did 9400m....

Cool, I think I could ahve done better though becasue we just started had training again last week. The lsat few weeks we have been resting a little after all our big meets. Last summer I was going to do a 2.6 mile open-water swim across Donner Lake (near Lake Tahoe) while I was on vacation. The water was about 60-70 degrees F. The problem was I thought the race was on a Sunday so when I got there it was actually the Fiday before. There also was this other guy on my team there and I didnn't even know it. I talked to him later and found out he placed second. Pretty cool, huh?

Back to hard sets:
Yesterday we did an hour worth of 100's on 5 seconds rest. You just keep swimming for an hour stopping every 100 for 5 seconds. I did 49, 2nd most on my team!

Today I had a pretty had set for me becasue I have flexibility problems with my shoulders and it makes it hard for me to do fly:

warmup- 3x: 400 IM swim/kick/drill/swim by 25
200 IM (descend the 200 IMs)

5x200 fly kick wiyht fins on 3:30
5x200 fly with fins and a bubble attached to my back on 3:15(bubbles are like what little kids attach to themselves when learning to swim)
5x200 fly with fins on 3:00
5x200 fly descend 1-5 on 4:00

200 easy

Total: 6,00 meters

Was your IM meters or yards, ive done a 1200 iyards m before. A practice I just remered that was sorta hard becasue it was a lot of sprinting was a 1650 yard free relay wiht 4 people. We all alternated 25s. I was a little challenging to sprint the whole time.

i just heard today that this guy from my team swam 2 years ago for 12 hours straight!!! He swam at night from 7PM to 7AM. He wasn't allowed to stop at the wall at any time. He thinks he did about 55,000 yards!!! And after that he went to eat and had to come back and swim in a meet.

Isn't that a bit unhealthy? During a training that is longer than one hour I always drink things like isostar, AA-drink or Extran
And when you're not allowed to stop it is impossible to drink.
(or did he swim in a pool filled with energy-drink?)

During long distance swim meets the swimmers stop every 20-30 minutes to eat or drink something and those races take at most 9 hours

That would probably be very unhealthy now that you mention it. The only way he could drink would be to kick and have someone throw him a bottle so he could drink or he could drink the pool water.

I am not sure about all the details because he just told me about it without relly going into to much detail. I suppose he did eat or drink during the swim because the coach wouldn't risk his swimmer fainting and going to the hospital in the middle of practice. So i don't have all the answers, only my best guesses.
But even with "pit stops" for eating and drinking this is one hard set, more mentally than physically.

OK, i got the answer about the eating and drinking from the guy who did it. He wasn't allowed to stop or touch the floor. He swam in a lane 1and had food and drink layed-up on the side of the pool. While still moving in the water he would grab something from the side, take a bite or a sip from it and put it back further down along the wall.

heres a hard set cuz i hurt my shoulder:

35x100 meter free on the 1:25

about 20 into it my shoulder gave in and i had to kick (with fins) it was pretty hard cuz im not a great kicker and it was outside with no lanelines and there were pool jets on so i was zig-zagging eveywhere

I have a step test tomorrow... have it every 6 weeks i absolutely hate it. It's 7 x 400 decending the last 200m but 4 seconds each time, so on the last one you have to do your PB + 4 seconds (without a dive). Then you get 5 mins rest and you have to do 24 x 100 @ 1.50 at 10-15 bbm. It's all on your number 1 stroke so I pity you if you're a fly swimmer!!! Luckily im a freestyler!

One of the most boring sets that we do is a 4000 IM which alternates 200 fly, 200 IM, 200 back, 200 IM, etc. We do it about once a week. And soon we will be doing 6000 IM's!

we had a marathon.... swam 43 000 meters (in longcourse), with one break during the day. It took a while, but it was fun...

and 4x (5x200) butterfly is a challenge....

We have done just like Yvonne Renate Høgenhaug, the butterfly. Only we did 3 times 8x200. Start every 2.45 (in longcourse). It was very hard, Only me and Maurice Geurts could handel it.

And a 4 times 1500 meter max is also very hard. I had in there 17.01.00, 17.12.00, 16.56.00 and 16.51.00. It was al at the longcourse.

pulse between 160-180
Between sets was 400 easy swim

400: I went 4.48-4.51, 200: IM 2.18-2.22,Back 2.20,2.22 and 100 1.02-1.03

I guess this set isnt really that hard compared to some but once we had to do 16x50 best...and unfortunately for me im a butterflyer...the set was:

16x50 fly
4 on 55
4 on 50
4 on 45
4 on 40

the last 8 were hell to do!! but it was fun

An interesting Long Course Meters VO2MAX set that I've done in the past:
-3x -3x100m Free (1:10)
-100m Easy (2:00)
-2x100m Free (1:10)
-200m Easy (4:00)
-1x100m Free (1:10)
-300m Easy (6:00) (Total Distance = 3,600m).

Another VO2Max Set I used to do (Long Course Meters of course):

-5x (3x100m on 1:30) - BREASTSTROKE HOLD PB+10secs.
Usually paddle off an easy 100m in between each 3x100m.

And a more recent difficult set, more of a thershold set this though, would have to be (Short Course Meters):

30x100m @ -10x100m Fly (1:30)
-10x100m Choice Form Stroke (1:30)
-10x100m Freestyle (1:20)

Then back it up with a 100m Time Trial. =)

Another Set, not necessarily a hard one, but just something I do a couple of mornings a week at the moment:

-20x200m (on 3:00 for Free or just 10secs rest for Form), all are choice swim.... all are heart rate about 150.... and the last 2 repeats (ie. no. 19 & 20 are Heart Rate 170+ and in main stroke).

Sometimes followed by 4x10m mini sprints with a drag belt.

The Olympic Set was the hardest for me, it goes like this...

1500 free, 400 free, 200 free, 100 free, 50 free,
200 back, 100 back,
200 breast, 100 breast,
200 medley,
200 fly and 100 fly with 30 secs rest between everything.

One of the hardest sets our coache makes us do is :

800 I.M, fast
2x400 I.M, (one fast, one easy)
4x200 I.M, (easy, fast, easy, fast)
8x100 I.M fast

If our coach wants to torture us even more, he'll make us do it long course.

1500 m warming-up (don't know what exactly)

15×100 on 1'30 i guess
5×300 10 secs rest
3×500 15/20 secs rest
1×1500 (in dutch a2-a3 speed=quite heavy)

500m cooling down or something

= total: 8000 m
